Boopshi’s – Schnitzel & Spritz

On Valentine’s Day Matt and I celebrated with a trip down an abandoned tube station at Aldwych on the Strand. As he had booked this (and a hotel stay in the evening) I suggested that I take care of the food requirements for the weekend. I needed to arrange a lunch and a dinner and I wanted them both to be things that I knew he would enjoy.

One thing I have learnt from Matt is how much he loves a good sausage. Bratwurst, Currywurst, Bockwurst and Knackwurst. Now we both like Herman Ze German and their barely phallic at all logo, and our friends at Bish Bash Bangers bring an incredible Currywurst to London’s street food scene, but this required something different.

A bit of research online later and I found Boopshi’s on Windmill Street. An up to date take on Schnitzel and Spritz, but with a sausage selection that I hoped would satisfy Matt.

The restaurant is bright and airy and has a pop-up feel to it upstairs. The basement (closed this lunchtime) looked cosy and warm by comparison. We were served promptly and Matt opted for the Bratwurst with skinny fries.

I on the other hand can never refuse veal when I see it in a menu, so I opted for a Schnitzel of Rose Veal with a side of Spatzle ‘n‘ cheese. To drink, a Spritz of course, and I chose the #7 made with Kamm and sons, almdudler, sherbet, and prosecco. I had to choose this because Kamm and Sons British Aperitif is currently one of my favourite drinks! The Spritz was extraordinarily good – very tasty and quite boozy – I could have drunk quite a few I suspect!

The food arrived and the schnitzel was beautiful. The rose veal was pale and tender and perfectly complimented by crisp breadcrumbs. It really didn’t need anything other than a little pepper and a little lemon juice.

The Spatzle’n’cheese was nothing short of glorious! Fresh Spatzle in a super creamy and rich sauce and grilled to crispy perfection on top. For me, this was an absolute highlight and I could have eaten it all day! So much better than what passes for Mac’n’Cheese in so many London eateries recently.

Overall the menu is quite small but it is a great selection of dishes and I can’t wait to go back to try something else.

You can find Boopshi’s at 31 Windmill Street London W1T 2JN and I highly recommend a visit. Tell them Big Gay Al sent you!
